Game News: Sony Online Entertainment Boss Says New IPs Coming, Star Wars Galaxies Mistakes Were “Utter Fail”

John Smedley, the President of Sony Online Entertainment for the last 10 years, has revealed that the in-house developer has some big new IPs in the works – and has also apologised for the much-criticized changes made to popular MMO Star Wars Galaxies.

In an ‘Ask Me Anything’ question and answer session over at Reddit, Smedley confirmed that SOE have multiple original IPs in development when questioned on the matter.

And when one fan asked about the hugely controversial changes made to Star Wars Galaxies, which are widely considered to have buried the initially successful MMORPG, Smedley responded: “Stupid decisions. Complete and utter fail and I am very sorry.”

Star Wars Galaxies launched in 2003 to critical acclaim and an eager fanbase, but the introduction of Combat Upgrade and New Game Enhancement two years later – seen by many fans to reduce the richness and complexity of the experience – led to a dramatic reported drop in subscribers by 2006.

Smedley defended the changes at the time, but has clearly now come to regret them.
