Mass Effect Producer Asks Fans: “Should The Next Game Be A Prequel?”

In the latest of a series of attempts to gauge fan opinion on the future direction of the Mass Effect series, BioWare’s Casey Hudson has taken to Twitter to see whether gamers would prefer the next game to be a sequel or a prequel.

“Parsing through your thoughts on the next ME game,” wrote the Executive Producer yesterday. “Would you be more interested in a game that takes place before the trilogy, or after?”

Speculation has been rife as to the possible next step for the critically-acclaimed, big-selling sci-fi series, and BioWare – no doubt stung by the vitriolic response by many gamers to the much-derided conclusion of Mass Effect 3 – have been extremely keen to court fan opinion on the subject.

“We’re in early stages of designing a completely new Mass Effect game,” Tweeted Hudson earlier this month. “What would you want to see in it?”

People will no doubt be divided in their opinion as to whether this level of developer-fan discussion will ultimately prove to be a positive thing or not, although recent assertions by CD Projekt RED’s Tomasz Zawada that game companies should put “fans before profit”, would suggest that this apparent move towards stronger engagement will be strongly welcomed by some.

Any company has to make a profit if they want to be a company unless its for some sort of research or whatever where profits if anything has more intangible results. I would also prefer a Mass Effect Sequel NOT a Prequel. I like to look forward not backward when telling a story. In a Prequel unless I REALLY get into the story I always say the ultimate end doesn’t because you already know what happens at some point in the future.

    Please stop, Bioware.

I am more in favor of moving the galaxy forward, as opposed to going back. I would like to see the Mass Effect galaxy possibly interact with neighboring galaxies in the next game. Introduce new species not only in the Milky Way, but in the Andromeda and others as well. Expand the scope. Hopefully that will be possible on the next gen systems. An intergalactic story would be tremendously entertaining. The possibilities for Mass Effect are endless. Whatever direction they choose to go, I will be taking the journey.
