Movie News: Surprising figures for The Help

For the past three weeks, The Help, has been the number 1 film at the US Box Office. It’s the first movie since Inception to have topped the charts in the US for three consecutive weekends.

An adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s novel of the same name, set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights period in 1960’s America, centres on a white woman’s relationship with two black maids. To everyone’s surprise The Help has managed to hold off the threat from the ‘bigger films’ including the likes of Final Destination 5.

In second place is The Debt, written by the emerging dream team of Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman, starring Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Tom Wilkinson and Ciarán Hinds about retired spies whose past has well and truly come back to haunt them. This is the hotly anticipated remake of the 2007 Israeli film Ha-Hov.

Trailing behind these movies are Apollo 18 – a found footage movie produced by Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Wanted) and Shark Night 3D based around…shark attacks!

The top 5 are as below:

1. The Help – $123.4 mil total
2. The Debt – $14.1 mil
3. Apollo 18 – $10.7 mil
4. Shark Night 3D – $10.3 mil
5. Rise of the Planet of the Apes – $162.5 mil

With The Help doing so well in the States, will there be the inevitable Oscar buzz surrounding it? Only time will tell.
