Movie News: Dirty Dancing Remake

Let’s get the quotes out the way, “Nobody puts baby in a corner”, “You just put your pickle on everybody’s plate, college boy, and leave the hard stuff to me” – the list goes on.

No matter how you feel about this coming-of-age movie, it’s iconic and in many people’s eyes – a classic. It’s won an Academy Award for Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes’ ballad “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” and nearly 25 years on, it’s still referenced and spoken about with love.

So, Dirty Dancing has the ideal prerequisites for what has become the most common phrase in Hollywood… a remake. What a surprise. Is nothing safe? It seems not, after all Footloose has had the updated treatment.

The studios have hired the choreographer from the original movie, Kenny Ortega, to direct. Good choice… maybe… maybe not, however he will understand the spirit of Dirty Dancing and somehow he also manages to understand the younger generation.

After all he has directed three very successful High School Musical films and made stars out of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. There’s no word yet on story and casting but expect Lionsgate to move fast on this one.
