Gaming News: Assassin’s Creed 3 Officially Unveiled

Following days of rumour, speculation and high-profile leaks, Ubisoft have finally unleashed the official details of Assassin’s Creed III – shedding light on the title’s new hero, game engine and release date, as well as hinting at important story elements and gameplay mechanics.

Set for release on October 31st this year, Assassin’s Creed III takes place against the backdrop of the American Revolution and will star a half Native-American/half English protagonist called Ratohnake:ton, who adopts the name ‘Connor’ and becomes an assassin in “the war for liberty against ruthless tyranny” after his village is burned. His story will span the entire Revolutionary War, taking players from the wild, untamed frontier to bustling colonial towns and chaotic, bloody battlefields.

Powered by a new game engine dubbed Ubisoft-AnvilNext, the developers are promising stunning graphics complete with a leap forward in visual quality, character models and AI, while on the gameplay-front there is talk of “the most stylized and fluid combat experiences in the franchise to date”, no doubt fueling speculation that Ubisoft have taken a leaf out of Arkham City when it comes to the action stakes.

A statement by the company’s chief executive officer, Yves Guillemot, also appears to confirm that the game will boast much more of an open-world experience than in previous titles.

“Assassin’s Creed III features the franchise’s most expansive setting so far,” he said. “Whether you’re a longtime fan or are new to the franchise, you’re going to be blown away by the scale of the game.”

Created by Ubisoft Montreal and six other Ubisoft studios, Assassin’s Creed III has been in development for three years and is heading for the Xbox360, PC and PlayStation 3 this Autumn – while a Wii U version is also in the works.
