Earlier this year Nintendo announced that they were working on a 2D Mario title for the 3DS and, as of last night, they have revealed that the new project is indeed New Super Mario Bros. 2. The side-scrolling platformer will launch this August in both Japan and North America. There is no word yet on a European release.

Besides a few screenshots (shown below), no specific details have been given about the game, except that players can expect to see the Raccoon Mario and the Power Leaf. Also, a report from Nintendo’s own Facebook page details that Luigi will be a playable character.

Given how good the first game was for both the DS and the Wii we can expect great things and possibly some new innovations on the platformer genre. Stay tuned to FMV Magazine as we get closer to this year’s E3, where more details on this game and other Nintendo titles that will be announced.
